The Aiken SC D-STAR Club will hold a one day D-STAR workshop that will provide information and training on all levels of D-STAR, the Digital Smart Technology for Amateur Radio.  Classes will be organized to allow participants on all levels from new users to repeater system administrators gain knowledge about D-STAR’s digital voice and data technology.

TAIL GATE/SWAPFEST in PARKING LOT B from 10am till 11:45am before classes start.

Door prizes at the DSTAR University will be an ICOM DSTAR HT with RTS programming kit, additional RTS programming kits, GigaParts provided Raspberry PI/DV Mega Radio kit, The WIREMAN provided Coax Jumpers, and other prizes during the day. You must be present to win.

For those that want more D-STAR talk and information, an after class dinner get together is planned at the Mia Rancho Mexican Restaurant, less than a mile away.

Hour 1 – Intro to D-STAR

Hour 3 – Doing More with D-STAR

  • Using D-STAR data capabilities including D-RATS Setup and Using a RATFLECTOR
  • Setup and using the ICOM ANDROID free application with the 5100 or 51
  • Where to find D-STAR Resources

Hour 4A – D-STAR Hot Spots with Raspberry PI, DVAP and DV-MEGA and DSTAR HF

  • How to create a D-STAR Hot Spot
  • Hot Spot alternatives, Hardware Needs
  • Comparison of Hot Spot Software sources
  • Demonstration of creating a Raspberry Pi Hot Spot using a DV Mega
  • Overview of the capabilities of DSTAR DV on the HF Bands

Hour 4B (in Classroom/Break Area) – Setup, Operation and Troubleshooting D-STAR Repeaters

  • Repeater basics
  • Repeater setup and programming overview
  • Gateway setup tips
  • Trust Server registration
  • User Registration
  • Repeater operation and maintenance
  • Gateway utilities and add-ons

Hour 5 – Final Overview and Rap up

  • D-STAR Labor Pains, the Trip ongoing
  • D-STAR in Weather, SE D-STAR WX Net, NWS and National Hurricane Center
  • What is the Trust Server and why
  • Competitive Analysis update between, DSTAR, DMR, and FUSION
  • Future Devices past DVDongle and DVAP – Robin, AA4RC
  • Wrap Up and Door Prize Drawing

Class will be given by experienced instructors of the Georgia D-STAR group and DSTARinfo.com who have presented dozens of seminars and training across the country, John Davis, WB4QDX, Ed Woodrick, WA4YIH, and Robin Cutshaw, AA4RC who developed the DVDongle and DVAP, and others will present high speed data and other advancements in communication using D-STAR systems. The target audience for this session is those new to DSTAR, emergency management, hospital administrators and the more advanced D-STAR users.

No matter what your D-STAR experience, if any, there will be a wealth of information provided so that the beginner can go home and put his/her equipment on the air and the more advanced operator can explore the new data transfer methods which will have Emergency Management application.
